However, this appears to be due to the md driver thinking the array should be available to service requests during the resync, which causes it to run at minimum speed. The only way to get rid of those types of people is to jail them indefinitely or exterminate them.
I’d guess your concern about the MBR and boot loader and such is based on an assumption that the array is hosting the OS as well? I’ve seen boot loaders both Linux and Windows corrupting, so that would be an aspect for me.
The 311 md driver plus the chip running as raw SATA controllers is comparable to what you would be doing if you used the card with its windows drivers, so I’m not sure I understand your vehemence in rejecting this as a solution.
I know that even with my hardware solution that it took me two tries before I was able to get it to do what I wanted to. Posted June 4, 31114 is quite the opposite. I would like to see that more so than any benchmark. If you 33114 a rebuild in the BIOS your server will be off-line during the rebuild.

The drives should get here tomorrow or possibly monday, so I’ll have something to report by next week. The Opteron overheated while trying, crashed, and burned; and had to wait 15 minutes for it to cool off before it could be restarted.
And, be ready to get problems in case you are using PIC sound card, tv tuner etc. What I would like to see is how you would recover from a OS failure. This makes it popular, so it is then sought out and exploited by evil people.

How do you bring the array back online, while fully preserving the data that already resides on it, especially if it is driven by OS? In order to gain freedom, you must give up security, and vice versa.
One downside of this approach is that you can’t just replace a drive and have the software automatically rebuild the array. Unfortunately, it does exist, and we have to do our best to protect ourselves against it. There’s no partition table on the resulting array however.
Hopefully I’ll hear back soon from H. That said, I guess it would allow you to use what limited capabilities the card promises in the BIOS.
